…OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT is a multi-sensory collaborative art project between my pal Travis Abels and I. It began with an interest in storytelling, and the way stories evolve over time. Travis spent hundreds of hours interviewing people – friends, strangers and relatives – pulling apart their words and reorganizing the audio, using sound effects to weave elaborate soundscapes. Then he worked with musicians to create an original score for each piece. Once the audio was in place, we began collaborating on the accompanying artwork.
Now, how to share it… First, we released a record containing 10 of the audio portraits, a download code for the digital files (plus bonus goodies), and a 28-page full color booklet of the artwork. These are available for purchase right here, and you can get just the downloads on our Bandcamp page.
In September 2015, thanks to Chris Haberman and the fine folks at the People’s Art of Portland, Travis and I were able to display 11 of the portraits with audio and Travis’ 9-minute Storyscape at the A.I.R. Gallery in Portland, OR.
All of this was possible thanks to 132 amazing people who backed our Kickstarter project. THANK YOU!
